Basic information
This article explains how to upload and publish a new on-demand video from Pangea CMS. When published, each on-demand video:
- Has a dedicated content page with a public URL.
- Can be embedded directly on text content pages as supporting content. Readers can watch the video without leaving the content page.
Alternatively, the Stealth published status supports publishing an on-demand video for use only as supporting content. This option is useful for shorter videos that do not warrant a dedicated page. For details, see the following article:
This article focuses on preparing a video for standard publication. To learn about stealth publication, see the alternative article that is linked above.
Upload a video file
First, you need to upload the relevant video file to Pangea CMS. To start the upload process, go to Create > Multimedia > Video. Pangea can upload up to four video files at the same time. For detailed description of the the upload process, see the following article:
As soon as the upload starts:
- The video is saved in Pangea CMS. The default title for the video matches the name of the video file.
- Pangea CMS creates an edit page for the video. Here, you need to add and update the relevant video settings before publication.
To open the edit page for an uploaded video, follow either step below:
- Hit the Edit button in the upload manager.
- Find the video on the main Search page and hit the title.
The remaining chapters in this article describe the essential steps for publishing a new on-demand video, as well as some optional features that might be helpful.
Add required settings
Via General, you can add all the required settings. You will not be able to save the video until you add the following required settings:
- Title: Provide the main title for the video.
- Categories: Select one or more Categories. If you select multiple Categories, set one Primary Category.
For detailed information about these settings, see the articles below:
Add a URL slug
You can add a URL slug to the URL for the video page. Creating a URL slug improves usability and SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Create a URL slug via General > URL slug.
Follow the guidelines below:
- Use the local language for your site.
- Use clear, human-readable language.
- Match the URL slug to the content on the specific page.
- Separate words with hyphens ("new-york" not "newyork").
Try to keep the URL slug concise. This means:
- Include just words that are essential to convey meaning.
- Do not include words with no semantic value (such as "a" and "the").
- Do not include prepositions and linking words (such as "and", "of", and "at")
For detailed information with examples, see the following article:
Define the video thumbnail
The video thumbnail (sometimes called a 'poster' or 'player image') is the image displayed in the video player before the video is played. An effective thumbnail helps your video to stand out amongst other content, encourages engagement, and sets expectations by providing an at-a-glance preview of the content.
The following options are available for defining the video thumbnail:
- Video frame: Use a frame (timepoint) from the video file.
- Website teaser: Use the website teaser image.
- Image upload: Upload a custom image.
Choose your preferred option via Video > Thumbnail
For detailed information, see the following article:
For horizontal videos, you only need to consider the horizontal thumbnail. (Horizontal videos are always displayed inside a horizontal player.) For vertical videos, you need to consider both the vertical and horizontal thumbnail. (Vertical videos are displayed inside a vertical player on mobile and a horizontal player on desktop.) For details, see the following article:
Trim the video file
Using the Trim feature, you can cut unnecessary content from the start and / or the end of a video file. You can only trim a file that is fully uploaded and processed.
For detailed instructions, see the following article:
Add an introduction
An effective introduction communicates what visitors can expect from the video and encourages engagement with the content. The introduction might be displayed on a number of public pages. A content page with an effective introduction looks more attractive when it is shared and previewed.
Add an introduction via General > Introduction. Tick Display introduction to show the introduction below the player on the video page.
NOTE: The Display introduction setting controls if the introduction is shown on the video page. Even if this option is unticked, the introduction might still be displayed on other public pages.
The Introduction field should include a maximum of 300 characters and only supports plain text. If you want to show a longer text on the video page, or you want to provide links to other pages, you can enter content via General > Content.
Ensure the video has a meta description
The meta description is included in the source code for a webpage. Search engines prioritize pages with meta descriptions that are unique and descriptive. The meta description might also be displayed in the preview for the page on search engine results pages.
To ensure that the video has a curated meta description, it is important to complete at least one of the following fields:
- General > Introduction
- Website teaser > Introduction
To learn more, see the following article:
Manage the status and publish
A video might have one of the following publication statuses:
- Draft: The video is not published and is not accessible on the public site. The item is still in progress and is not yet ready for editorial review.
- Edited: The video is not published and is not accessible on the public site. The first draft of the item is ready and waiting for editorial review.
- Published: The video is published and is accessible on the public site. The video has a public URL and is indexed by search engines.
- Stealth published: The video is available for use as supporting content. The video does not have a public URL and is not indexed by search engines. For detailed information, see the following article:
Change the status using the selector at the top of the edit page. For example, to change the status from Draft to Edited:
- Select Edited in the selector.
- Hit Save or Save & close.
The video is now saved in Pangea CMS with the Edited status.
When you are ready to publish the video, two options are available:
- Publish immediately.
- Schedule publication for a set time and date in the future.
For detailed information about the options for publishing a new content page, see the following article:
