Create a Content Category

update

What's inside this article:

Basic information

Categories (previously Zones) organize the content on your website by topic. For example, your website might have a "Politics" Category for all content relating to politics. For detailed information about Categories, see the following article:

This article explains how to create a Content Category from Pangea CMS. A Content Category is a type of multipurpose Category with general settings, suitable for promoting any type of content. A Content Category normally includes a mixture of different content types.

To learn about TV and Radio Categories, see the alternative article below:

Create a Content Category

To create a new Content Category:

  1. Go to Settings > Categories (Zones) in the primary navigation.
  2. Select + Add new.
  3. Under Program Pages, ensure None is selected.

The remaining sections in this article will walk you through each stage of the creation process:

Add a Title and English name

For every Category, it is required to add the following settings:

  • Title: The title of the Category in the local language for your site. The title is displayed at the top of content pages on the public site. Ensure the title accurately reflects the Category content. We suggest a maximum of 40-60 characters.
  • English name: The name of the Category in English. The name is not displayed on the public site. Using English makes the name understandable for CMS users who do not speak your local language.

Select supported content types

In the right column, tick every content type that you want the Category to support. Alternatively, tick Check all to support all content types.

The Category can only include supported content types. For example, if only Article is ticked, the Category only includes Articles. The Category is not available for any other content types.

Manage distribution settings

You can control where content from the Category is shared.

Tick or untick the following options, according to your preferences:

RSS Enabled

If RSS Enabled is ticked, the Category is shared as an RSS feed. Website visitors can subscribe via a third-party RSS reader app to be notified about new content.

Public RSS feeds are listed on the RSS / Podcasts page under the RSS tab.

Show In Archive

If Show In Archive is ticked, all content from the Category is automatically added to the Archive Category for your website. Each website can have only one Archive Category. The Archive Category includes content from all Categories where the Show In Archive setting is ticked.

If your website does not have an Archive Category, this setting has no effect.

Enable for mobile apps

If Enable for mobile apps is ticked:

  • Content from the Category is searchable in the mobile app.
  • Content from the Category is promoted on the old version of the the mobile app homepage. Mobile app users who have not yet updated to the latest app version still see the old version of the homepage.

IMPORTANT: The Enable for mobile apps setting does not impact the latest version of the mobile app homepage.

To learn how to manage the latest version of the mobile app homepage, see the alternative article below:

Connect a YMAL, Slide-in widget, and Region

A Content Category might have the following connected elements:

  • One You Might Also Like (YMAL)
  • One Slide-in widget
  • One Region

To learn how to connect each element, review the sections below:

You Might Also Like (YMAL)

Under You Might Also Like, optionally select one YMAL.

The YMAL is displayed on content pages below the main content.

For detailed information about YMAL, see the following articles:

Slide-in widget

Under Slide-in widget, optionally select one Slide-in widget.

The Slide-in widget "slides in" at the bottom of content pages after a visitor starts scrolling.

For detailed information about Slide-in widgets, see the following article:

Region

Under Right Responsive Region, optionally select one Region.

The Region is displayed on content pages. When your site is viewed on desktop, Regions are displayed in one column on the right side of the page. On mobile and tablet, Regions are displayed below the main content.

For detailed information about Regions, see the following articles:

Enable a Category page

A Category page lets website visitors browse all the content from the same Category. To enable a Category page for the current Category, ensure the box next to Enable category (zone) archive page is ticked.

Each Category page is automatically generated, according to a pre-defined layout. To choose your preferred layout, select Change page layout.

For a detailed description of each layout, see the following article:

Add metadata

For every Category, it is required to add the following settings:

  • Meta title
  • Meta description

The metadata is included in the source code for the Category page. Metadata helps search engines (like Google) to understand the page content. The text might be displayed on search engine results pages and can impact how the page ranks for different search queries.

For detailed information, see the following article:

Select a status and save the Category

Under Category (Zone) Status, select your preferred status for the Category.

The following general statuses are available for all Categories:

  • Visible on site - enabled: Content can be added to the Category from Pangea CMS. The Category is visible on the public site.
  • Visible on site - discontinued: Content cannot be added to the Category from Pangea CMS. The Category is visible on the public site.

The following statuses are available only for new Categories:

  • Visible in CMS only: The Category is not visible on the public site. Content can be added to the Category from Pangea CMS. Content from the Category is accessible on the public site, but the Category name is not displayed on content pages and the Category does not have a published Category page.
  • Archive: This status lets you create a special Archive Category. Each website can have only one Archive Category. The Archive Category includes content from all Categories where the Show In Archive setting is ticked.
  • Disabled: The Category is not visible on the public site. Content cannot be added to the Category from Pangea CMS.

When you are satisfied, hit Save to save the new Category.

If you leave the Edit Category (Zone) screen without hitting Save, all changes will be lost and you will not be notified.
