What's inside this article:

Basic information

This article explains how to embed an allowed external media item.

You might embed an allowed external media item as follows:

Retrieve embed code or URL

First, you need to retrieve the embed code / URL for the external media item from the third-party platform. In most cases, you need an embed code. However, in some cases it is also possible to use a URL. You can check the requirements from Pangea CMS. For details, go to the following section:

To embed a YouTube Short with vertical orientation, you need to use the URL (not the embed code). For details, see the following article:

Embed on a content page

  • Article
  • Blog
  • FactCheck (embed in the Verdict content)
  • Feature
  • Feature story
  • Live blog (embed in a post)
  • News
  • Transcript

To learn how to create these content pages from the beginning, see the following articles:

To embed an allowed external media item from the edit screen for a text content page:

  1. Via Editor, click inside the main box to reveal the CKEditor bar. Position the cursor where you want to insert the item.
  2. Hit the Insert Embedded Content button in CKEditor.
  3. Select External media.
  4. Under External media URL or embed code, paste the embed code / URL.
  5. Under Personal note, optionally enter a note. Personal notes are displayed only in Pangea CMS (not on the public site). The purpose is to let other CMS users verify what has been embedded.
  6. Hit Attach.

You see a placeholder representing the embedded item in CKEditor. If you added a personal note, the note is displayed on the placeholder.

To check exactly how the embedded item will look on the published page, use the options under Preview in the left panel.

Embed on an HTML widget

You can embed an allowed external media item on an HTML widget. This lets you display the item on any of the following pages / segments:

  • Section pages (including your homepage)
  • Infopages
  • Landings
  • Regions
  • You Might Also Like (YMAL)

To embed an external media item on an HTML widget:

  1. Select Build in the primary navigation.
  2. Choose the type of page / segment where you want to display the external media item.
  3. Select the specific page / segment where you want to display the external media item.
  4. Ensure Editor is selected in the left panel.
  5. Select the empty area where you want to display the widget.
  6. Select New widget > HTML to start building a new HTML widget.
  7. In the Content section, hit the Insert embedded content button.
  8. Follow steps 3-6 under Embed on a content page.

The remaining steps are the same as for creating a standard HTML widget. For instructions, see the following article:

Check requirements

From the External media tab, you can check the requirements for each allowed embed. In most cases, you need an embed code. However, in some cases it is also possible to use a URL.

For each item, hover over the ? to see what is required to embed this item (embed code or sharing URL).

Request a new allowed external media item

If the item you want to embed is not included on the list of allowed external media, you can contact Pangea Customer Care to request that a new item is added to the list. Before making a request, review the conditions below:

  • An allowed item needs to offer long-term value for multiple Pangea sites.
  • We do not approve requests that are connected to one-off projects.

If you need a particular embed for a one-off project, we suggest that your site creates the embed as a Snippet / Dynamic infographic instead.
