What's new?

Option to merge a Section and a Category

If your website has both a Section and a Category page for one topic, you can now merge the Section and the Category to have just one page instead of two.

When a Section and a Category are merged, the Section is displayed on the Category page above the content list. You can see an example of how this might look below:

  • (A): Section
  • (B): Content list

Merging these two pages into one offers the following main benefits:

  • Your website has just one landing page for the topic. This simplifies navigation and removes the need to maintain two sets of metadata.
  • Website visitors can enjoy a consistent experience when moving between content pages and landing pages.
  • You can promote your most important stories on the Section, while also allowing visitors to scroll and load more content almost infinitely.

After a Section is merged with a Category:

  • The Section is no longer a standalone page.
  • The Section URL will redirect to the Category page URL.
  • Only the metadata for the Category page is used.
  • Only the Custom URL for the Category page is used.

Merging a Section and a Category is optional. If preferred, your website can continue to maintain both pages (Section and Category page) or offer just a simple Category page with no Section.

New controls in Pangea CMS

To support the merging of Sections and Categories, we have added new controls in Pangea CMS. You can merge a Section to a Category using one of the methods below:

  • (A): On the Section edit page, select a Category via General > Category.
  • (B): On the Category edit page, select a Section via Layout settings > Section.

Only the List with images (previously 'List with thumbnails') Category layout can include a Section. If a different layout is selected, the Category page cannot include a Section.

New Localization key

After the 8.40 release, site admins will be able to add a local value for the following configuration key on the Site localization page in Pangea CMS:

Key nameGlobal value
Responsive.ZoneArchive.LatestFromCategoryLatest from this Category

This text will be displayed above the content list when a Category page includes a Section.

Title improvements for non-content pages

For most non-content pages, we have moved the title out of the header and into the page body. With this change, we aim to make the title more prominent and clearly signal the purpose of each page for website visitors.

This improvement is visible on the following pages:

  • Category (excluding the "Multimedia archive" layout)
  • Infopages
  • Subscription
  • Jobs
  • Schedule
  • Program
  • Radio
  • Podcast / RSS

We plan to bring this improvement for Section pages in a future release. For Section pages, this improvement will come with additional functionality that will allow web editors to easily switch between a graphic header (banner) and simple text header.

Text highlighting

Highlighting is now available from the text editor in Pangea CMS. Highlighting lets you draw the reader's attention to key details in the text. To highlight text:

  1. Select the text you want to highlight.
  2. Go to Styles > Highlight.

This option is available when you create the following types of content:

  • Article
  • Blog
  • FactCheck
  • Feature
  • Feature story
  • Live blog
  • Transcript

To ensure a unified look and feel across different pages, one color option is available for highlighting. The same color (pale gold: #FCDC9F) is used for all entities and sites. This color was selected to complement all brand color pallets.

'See also' links to content from other sites

Editors can now insert See also links that point to content pages from other websites under the same entity. For example, RFE/RL websites can insert 'See also' links to content from other RFE/RL websites. Previously, 'See also' links could only point to content from the same website.

'See also' links to other websites will always open in a new tab. The title on the link will be displayed in the original language.
