Manage versions

update

What's inside this article:

Basic information

The Versions feature in Pangea CMS supports updates to the following segments:

  • Sections (including your homepage)
  • Infopages
  • Landings
  • Regions
  • You Might Also Like (YMAL)

We suggest using versions if you need to make significant updates to the layout or widgets on a published segment. The process works basically as follows:

  • Two versions might exist for one segment. One version is active and one version is inactive. If the segment is published, only the active version is visible on the public site.
  • You can edit the inactive version privately, without impacting the active version.
  • When you are ready, you can make the inactive version active.

This article explains how to work with versions in Pangea CMS.

Access versions

To get started, go to the edit page for the relevant segment. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Build.
  2. Select the segment type (Sections, Infopages, Regions, Landings, or YMAL).
  3. Select the specific segment you want to update.
  4. Versions are available in the top-left corner.

The remaining chapters in this article explain the available options for managing versions:

Check the current versions

To see the current versions for this segment, open the Versions selector.

The Active badge marks the current active version. If the segment is published, the active version is visible on the public site. All other versions are inactive.

You can select an inactive version to view or edit it.

Create a new inactive version

To create a new inactive version, you normally need to clone the active version. The system then creates a new inactive version, which is a clone of the active version. The new inactive version (clone) initially matches the active version (it has the same widgets and layout blocks).

NOTE: If multiple inactive versions are permitted for your site, you might also clone an inactive version. However, by default, the system allows only 2 versions for each segment (1 active and 1 inactive). Learn more.

To create a new version:

  1. Under Versions, select the version you want to clone.
  2. Hit the Clone selected version button. If the maximum number of permitted versions has already been reached, this button is inactive.
  3. Under Title, provide a title to identify the version in Pangea CMS. This title will not be displayed on the public site. Hit Clone to confirm the action.

The edit page for the new inactive version opens. The rules for editing an inactive version are described in the chapter below:

Edit an inactive version

When you edit an inactive version, most changes to the content and layout will not be inherited by the active version. You can make the following changes to an inactive version, without impacting the active version:

  • Add new widgets and layout blocks
  • Delete widgets and layout blocks
  • Move widgets and layout blocks
  • Edit independent widgets

The following exceptions apply:

Library widgets

If the inactive version includes a library widget, any edits to the library widget will be inherited by all other instances of the widget. This includes the widget instance on the active version of the segment. On the Editor subpage, library widgets are marked with the Widget library badge.

To learn more about library widgets, see the following article:

Settings

The same General and SEO settings are shared by all versions of the segment. For example, if you update the Meta title from the inactive version, the change will also be applied for the active version (and vice versa).

Manage cloned widgets

On a new inactive version, all independent widgets are initially cloned. A cloned widget is connected to the original widget on the active version and will inherit all updates from the original widget. This ensures that all relevant updates to the active version will also be reflected on the inactive version.

After you edit a cloned widget from the inactive version and save the changes:

  • The connection with the original widget is lost.
  • The widget will no longer inherit updates from the original widget.
  • The widget is no longer a cloned widget.

On the Editor subpage for an inactive version, all widgets that remain cloned are marked with the Cloned badge (widget A below). Widgets that have been edited are no longer cloned do not have this badge (widget B below).

Change the active version

Under Versions, the active version is marked with the Active badge. If the segment is published, the active version is visible on the public site.

To change the active version:

  1. Under Versions, select the version you want to make active.
  2. Hit the Make selected version active button.

The selected version is now active.

Change a version title

Each version has a title that is visible only in Pangea CMS. To change a version title:

  1. Under Versions, select the version you want to rename.
  2. Hit the Edit selected version button.
  3. Enter the new title in the Title box. Then, hit Save.

The new title is now applied in Pangea CMS.

Delete a version

To delete an existing version:

  1. Under Versions, select the version you want to delete.
  2. Hit the Delete selected version button.

The selected version is now deleted and cannot be restored.

NOTE: You cannot delete the active version. First, you need to make a different version active.

Maximum number of versions

By default, Pangea CMS permits a maximum of two versions for each segment (one active and one inactive). If you want to create a new version, but two versions already exist, you can first delete the inactive version. For instructions, go to the following chapter in this article:

If necessary, we can increase the maximum number of versions that is permitted for your site. To discuss this possibility, please contact Pangea Customer Care.

NOTE: The default limit is applied because of storage limitations on our servers.
