Managing autosaved content

About autosave

How does autosave work?

While you are working on an edit screen, Pangea CMS creates regular autosaved versions of the content item. If you leave the edit screen unexpectedly, the most recent autosaved version is kept, ensuring you don't lose unsaved work.

When is an autosaved version available?

Pangea CMS provides an autosaved version if the edit screen closes without you clicking Save & close or Close. For example:

  • If your browser crashes
  • If you close the tab or browser window
  • If you navigate to a different screen in Pangea CMS

Does autosave apply for all content types?

No. Autosave in Pangea CMS applies for the following content types only:

  • Article
  • Backgrounder
  • Blog
  • Feature
  • Feature Story
  • News
  • Transcript

Are all settings saved in an autosaved version?

Changes to the following settings are never saved in autosaved versions:

Changes to all other settings are saved.

Do other users see my autosaved versions?

No. Your autosaved versions (visible at the top of the main Search screen) are visible only to you.

Why is an autosaved version not available?

The following conditions apply for autosave in Pangea CMS:

  • If you close the edit screen by clicking Close, you do not see an autosaved version (even if the edit screen includes unsaved changes).
  • A new autosaved version is created every 60 seconds. If you were working on the edit screen for less than 60 seconds, you do not see an autosaved version.
  • Autosave does not apply for all content types.

Manage autosaved items

Your current autosave versions are displayed at the top of the main Search screen in Pangea CMS. These versions are only visible to you. Click the panel to see a list of the available autosaved versions.

Hover the cursor over the panel, and choose your preferred option:

  • Edit: Open the autosaved version and start editing it.
  • Discard: Discard the autosaved version. The following conditions apply:
    • If a version of the item is saved in Pangea CMS, the current version is still available without the changes from the autosaved version.
    • If no version of the item is saved in Pangea CMS, the item is completely removed.

Manage locked items

If the autosaved item is locked, you first need to click the Unlock icon.

NOTE: In most cases, the autosaved version will be locked for editing by you. This is because when an edit screen closes unexpectedly, the lock is not removed.

For detailed information about locking in Pangea CMS, see the following article:

When the item is unlocked, the Edit icon is available to start editing it.

Edit an autosaved item

When you edit an autosaved item, you see a dialog that provides basic information about the autosaved item. You can check:

  • The date and time when the autosaved item was created.
  • Which settings in the autosaved item differ to the current saved version in Pangea CMS (appears only if a current saved version exists).

Click Close to proceed. You can then edit the autosaved version according to your preferences.

The following options are available at the bottom of the screen:

  • Close: Changes in the autosaved version are not saved. The autosaved version remains available for editing later.
  • Discard & close: Changes in the autosaved version are not saved. The autosaved version is no longer available.
  • Save & close: Changes in the autosaved version are merged with the current saved version of the item. An autosaved version of the content item is no longer available.
  • Save: Changes in the autosaved version are merged with the current saved version of the item. The edit screen remains open (you are now editing the current saved version). An autosaved version of the content item is no longer available.
