Assigning GDB Sources and photographers to images

What's inside this article:

Basic information

This article explains how to assign GDB Sources and photographers to images.

GDB Source

The GDB Source is the organization with credit for an image. For a photo, this is often the external agency that owns permission to use the photo (for example, Reuters or AP). When you upload a new image to Pangea CMS, it is required to assign a GDB Source.

The GDB Source is displayed in the bottom-right corner when the image is displayed on the public site. This helps avoid copyright issues and provides additional information for visitors.

Photographer

The photographer is the image creator. For a photo, this is often the person who physically took the photo. When you upload a new image to Pangea CMS, optionally assign a photographer.

The photographer is displayed in the bottom-right corner when the image is displayed on the public site. The photographer is listed first, with the GDB Source afterwards in brackets.

Upload an image

GDB Sources and photographers are assigned during image upload. To learn how to upload images, see the following article:

Assign a GDB Source

It is required to assign a GDB Source via the Source drop-down menu.

When you upload an image to Pangea CMS, you can only assign a GDB Source from the approved list. To request that a new GDB Source is added to the approved list, contact Pangea Customer Care.

Assign a Courtesy photographer

After you select a GDB Source, the Photographer drop-down menu normally appears.

Via Photographer, optionally assign a Courtesy photographer. A Courtesy photographer is an approved photographer who is not employed by RFE/RL.

Assign an RFE/RL photographer

If you select RFE/RL as the GDB Source, you see the RFE/RL Photographer drop-down menu instead of the Photographer drop-down menu.

Assign a Manual-input photographer

A Manual-input photographer is a custom name that is assigned as the photographer for one image only.

This functionality is intended for assigning photographers on a one-off basis. If a photographer might be assigned to more images in the future, the photographer should not be assigned via manual input. Contact Pangea Customer Care to request that the photographer is added to one of the approved lists.

Alternatively, to assign a Manual-input photographer:

  1. Select Manual input under Photographer / RFE/RL Photographer.
  2. Under Name of photographer, enter the name of the photographer you want to assign to the image.

When you assign a Manual-input photographer:

  • The name is not automatically added to the approved list of Courtesy or RFE/RL photographers.
  • The name is not available as a search filter for future image searches in Pangea CMS.
