Basic information
When you update a webpage from Pangea CMS, it will normally take a few minutes before you see your updates on the public site. In most cases, you should see your updates within 5 minutes. The delay is caused by cache.
What is cache?
Simply put, cache is temporary data storage. Two types of cache can impact the wait time before your updates are visible:
CDN cache
Pangea web content is stored and delivered to end users by a global network of servers, known as a CDN (Content Delivery Network). This network includes the following types of servers:
- Local: Local servers store static copies of the content and ensure seamless delivery to end users.
- Origin: Origin servers store the original web content and handle updates to the content.
When an end user requests access to a webpage, the content is delivered from the closest local server. This ensures fast and seamless delivery. For content that has been recently updated, the local server will continue to serve the previous version until it receives the latest version from the origin server. In most cases, the new version should be available on local servers within 5 minutes. However, some content types have special rules. For details, go to the following chapter in this article:
Browser cache
Your web browser (for example, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) might store data from the websites you visit. This can help to achieve faster loading times, as the browser does not need to download the data again. Pangea does not control browser cache. If necessary, you can manually clear cache from your browser to see the very latest version of a webpage. For instructions, see the external articles below:
Immediately check your updates
When you open a webpage from inside Pangea CMS, the webpage opens in a new tab with all cache disabled. You see the latest version of the page, including very recent updates that are not yet visible for general website visitors. You might open a webpage from Pangea CMS as follows:
- Hit the Live site button on an edit page.
- Hit the Live site button (globe icon) on the main Search page.
You can also disable cache from the Editorial bar. For information about how to use the Editorial bar, see the following article:
In the Editorial bar, click the Cache slider so that it changes to OFF. After you perform this action, you will see the latest version of the current page.
Wait time for updates
When you update a webpage from Pangea CMS, you should normally see your updates on the public site within 5 minutes.
The 5-minute rule applies for updates to the following pages:
- Content pages (text, multimedia, and interactive)
- Section pages (except for your homepage)
- Infopages
- Category pages
The following special rules apply:
- Homepage: For updates to your homepage, the maximum wait time is around 2 minutes.
- Breaking news widget: For a new Breaking news widget, the maximum wait time is around 2 minutes.
- Live page: For updates to the media playlist, the maximum wait time is around 1 minute.
- Live blog pages: For general updates to a Live blog, the maximum wait time is around 5 minutes. However, special logic applies for new posts. When a new post is added to an active Live blog, the "New posts" button will appear on the page within 30 seconds. Website visitors can click this button to immediately load the latest version of the page, including the new post(s).
For pages not mentioned above, updates should normally appear within 5 minutes.
