How To: Photos of the Week Gallery

The Photos of the Week gallery goes out on Friday mornings (or early afternoon if necessary).

Search in the graphics database for POTW##, in which ## will be the number of the week in the year. The week of November 21-27 will be POTW48. Tanya Kancheva, the music library people, and possibly some people from the services are supposed to add the POTW tag to good photos when they upload them to the database. The web team can also add the tags when we spot good photos.

If a photo is related to one of our stories, you can add a link in the caption. (Usually the second, longer caption field, because otherwise there's no room for the HTML link.) Just add <a href="http://www.rferl.org/your_link_here"><strong>the words you want to highlight as a link</a></strong>

By Ricki's request, we should include the name of the photographer in the caption info. (e.g. Photo by Joe Schmoe for AFP). Names aren't always included in the GDB info, but if they are, use them.

Don't forget to click "Photo gallery archive" when you create the gallery in Pangea.

Aim for about 10 photos with a good variety of locations and themes (from our region, or somehow relevant to our region). Otherwise, it's all up to your aesthetic and editorial judgment.

Unless otherwise instructed, post the gallery (via placeholder) as a highlight, and when it gets bumped, move it down to the multimedia widget.

Add "photo editor" to your CV.
