Basic information
URL redirection lets you create a URL redirect from an invalid URL from your site to any valid URL (from your site or an external site). This is useful if the URL for a webpage is changed, or if a webpage is unpublished. Anyone who tries to visit the invalid URL is redirected automatically to the selected valid URL.
IMPORTANT: You can only create a URL redirect from an invalid URL that no longer points to a webpage (for example, an unpublished URL or a URL that has been changed). A URL redirect will not work if the old URL still points to a webpage.
This article explains how to create a URL redirect from Pangea CMS.
Create a URL redirect
To create a new URL redirect from Pangea CMS:
- Go to Administration > URL Redirection in the primary navigation.
- Hit + Add new.
- Under Old URL, enter the old URL. Use the relative form of the URL. This means everything after the first slash (for example, "a/32472306.html"). For detailed information, go to Supported formats.
- Under New URL, enter the target URL for the URL redirect. To create a URL redirect to your homepage, just enter a forward slash (/). For detailed information, go to Supported formats.
- Select Add.
The URL redirect is now created and should work immediately. A URL redirect will not work if the Old URL still points to a webpage. If necessary, unpublish the page. After the page is unpublished, the URL redirct should start working.
Supported formats
If you enter an unsupported URL format under Old URL or New URL, you see the following error:
- Incorrect URL format
To learn what might be the issue, review the rules in the sections below:
Old URL
IMPORTANT: You can only create a URL redirect from an invalid URL that no longer points to a webpage (for example, an unpublished URL or a URL that has been changed). A URL redirect will not work if the old URL still points to a webpage.
The following rules apply for entering the Old URL:
- Enter the relative form of the URL. This means everything after the first slash. For example, enter "a/32472306.html" rather than "https://www.rferl.org/a/32472306.html".
- Ensure the URL includes no spaces. If you see an error, check that the URL does not include a trailing space at the end.
- Ensure the URL does not start or end with a slash (/).
New URL
The following rules apply for entering the New URL:
- To create a URL redirect to your homepage, just enter a forward slash (/).
- Ensure the URL includes no spaces. If you see an error, check that the URL does not include a trailing space at the end.
- Ensure the URL does not start or end with a slash (/), unless the URL redirect is to your homepage.
- To create a URL redirect to a page from the same site, enter the relative form of the URL. This means everything after the first slash. For example, enter "a/32472306.html" rather than "https://www.rferl.org/a/32472306.html".
- To create a URL redirect to an external site, enter the full URL including the protocol (such as https://). For example, enter "https://facebook.com/rferl".
Troubleshooting
NOTE: A URL redirect will not work if the Old URL still points to a webpage. If possible, unpublish the page. After the page is unpublished, the URL redirect should start working.
You cannot create multiple URL redirects from the same URL. If a redirect already exists for the entered Old URL, you see the following error:
- Old URL already exists
If you see this error, we suggest the following:
- Search for the existing URL redirect that uses the same Old URL. Find it more quickly using the search box at the top of the screen.
- Once you find the URL redirect, start editing it. To redirect to a different URL, enter your preferred URL under New URL.
If you cannot find the URL redirect, try enabling the Show deleted slider to include deleted URL redirects on the list. Even if a URL redirect was previously deleted, it is not possible to create another URL redirect from the same URL.
To restore a deleted URL redirect, hover over the panel and hit Restore.
You can then edit the URL redirect, according to your needs.
